Jeffries Point, East Boston
Once home to Joseph P. Kennedy, father of President John F. Kennedy, Jeffries Point was one of the first areas of East Boston to be developed. Bordered by Logan Airport on one side and Boston Harbor on the other, Jeffries Point was developed on the western shoreline of Noddle Island by prominent Boston businessman William H. Sumner, the namesake of the Sumner Tunnel that connects downtown Boston to East Boston.
From its earliest days, Jeffries Point has been a working-class community, first of farmers, then shoremen, then manufacturers. In 1904, the area made history when the first underwater tunnel in the United States connected East Boston to downtown Boston, with service ending in Maverick Square. Maverick Station, steps away from BOUTIQ Boston, stands near the site where the trolley once emerged from its tunnel.
